about
Raf Veulemans was born on April 29th 1972, Leuven, Belgium.
Raf has always been into drawing and graphics ever since he was little. He is inpired by the amazing works of Durer and Gessner and has a strong passion for nature, animals and everything surrounding death. This fascination eventuelly led him to a degree in taxidermy.
In his art he makes the perishable eternal. He explores the tension between human and animal, life and death, eros and thanathos. He portrays death in a way that is soft and innocent. Some works are set to make a statement against animal testing and the use of animals in scientific experiments. Others are portraits of silent beings.
As the fragile balance of world wide ecosystems is threatend, biodiversity and ecology are also themes you can find in Raf's artwork, herewith contributing in creating a 'human species consciousness'.
Raf uses techniques as mummification, skeleton use and taxidermy in combination with etchings, drawings and acrylics to create a unique concept in contemporary art.
